Liberate La Crescent

We can't afford to allow Governor Walz' illegal orders hurt La Crescent families and businesses any longer. It's time to get our City Council to pass a resolution to open our town back up now!

To the Mayor & City Council,

WHEREAS, it is a human right to travel, conduct trade, assemble and do other things in order to live, and;

WHEREAS, the Declaration of Independence recognizes the right to pursue happiness, and;

WHEREAS, the purpose of the government is to protect people’s rights, and;

WHEREAS, our elected officials took an oath to uphold people’s constitutionally protected rights and are duty bound to abide by that oath, and;

WHEREAS, Governor Walz Emergency Executive Order 20-33 extending the ‘Stay Home’ order closing bars, restaurants and other places clearly violates people’s constitutionally protected rights and are blatantly unconstitutional, and;

WHEREAS, the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution states, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; nor deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws,”

THEREFORE, be it resolved, we the people of the City of La Crescent, demand you make a motion for and vote yes to pass the Liberate La Crescent Resolution that prevents city resources from enforcing Governor Walz' illegal shutdown orders.

    Gary Fiegen… the basketball hoops have much less to do with COVID than one person’s overreaction to WI minorities using the hoops. It’s interesting to note that now that the hoops are back… this concerned citizen doesn’t have a problem with her kid’s friends, in large groups, utilizing them without practicing social distancing.

    I would love to know how many of the local business owners signing this have been “directly” affected by COVID. It is pretty easy to argue your position when money motivates you… and you haven’t lost anyone or struggled to live or work with people who have Covid. A lot of cowardly flyers left secretly, and Monday morning quarterbacking, on this one. I will be watching who signs this and direct my business elsewhere.

    I love the fact that these flyers are being passed out by children… You want a discussion let us have one… but don’t drive around in your mini vans and SUVs making your children sneak up to doors leaving silly flyers. I will not support the businesses that are promoting themselves over human beings…and yes…I see a lot of you on here.

    One of the local businesses (who I see signed the petition stating how they are avidly addressing safety) was one I tried to support during COVID… Safety was the LEAST of their concerns as I waited 45 extra minutes after the 30 minute wait, watching all employees with no masks, standing in their side room observing multiple customers entering their kitchen to chat, while listening to two kitchen people constantly swearing at each other while I heard them messing up my order…

    Please let us open up our businesses fully while we practice safety via continued cleaning & sanitizing, distancing measures, and responsibility in mind. We have all continued to do our part while operating within the guidelines for the past 9+ weeks. Since 2 weeks ago when Wisconsin opened back up fully, all of our restaurants in town have seen take-out volume slow down pretty substantially while people venture 5 minutes over the border to dine in and socialize. We are all for keeping people safe and are working together as establishments to ensure we are collaborating on best practices. In total the 5 restaurants in town must employee north of 125 people who have already had hours limited and it is our goal to keep people in work during these trying times. La Crescent has always been a “bedroom community” and we are seeing people migrate over the border to do things they can’t do in the town they reside in. We are all in this together, and we support many local causes year in and year out, and hope that we can continue to for years to come. As another local establishment owner said in our discussion today “all we are asking for is an opportunity to operate with a slow bleed rather than operating under guidelines that cause us to hemorrhage”. Thank you to everyone for your support and let’s continue to keep people safe, but in a way that keeps people in work and able to continue to pay their bills.
