The Libertarian Party invited President Donald J. Trump to address their national convention taking place May 24th-26th and he accepted the invitation! This could be a monumental moment of uniting the conservative and libertarian causes around the MAGA agenda! Javier Milei, Libertarian President of Argentina, has already endorsed President Trump. This invitation was also sent to Joe Biden.
Trump merchandise was even available on their website for a short time before it was taken down. See below:
The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the country and it was able to get ballot access for their presidential candidates for the last two election cycles (2016 and 2020). The party has a mix of various philosophies ranging from anarchy to Constitutionalism to minarchy to pragmatism to single issue messages. It is clear that the majority of Libertarian voters would’ve otherwise voted Trump if there was not a Libertarian on the ballot.
There has been a growing underbelly within the party called the Mises Caucus that is further right than the Libertarian Party has been in decades. Their chosen leader, Angela McArdle, was elected as Chair of the party in 2022. They have done little to change the ineffective and obsolete nature of the party but have clearly made their messaging more palatable for small government conservatives.
Now the party is considering Trump to speak at their convention and receive their nomination! Trump is the most libertarian President of the modern era, and for a long time further back, and it should come as no surprise that Trump is finding common ground with hardcore liberty voters. Trump will eliminate the deep state, end the foreign wars, cut regulations, cut taxes, fight the new world order, protect our gun rights, clean up our elections, and preserve our God given Rights. What more could a libertarian want?
More importantly, Trump has the attitude and persona of a libertarian. He is not a Globalist who will cave and do as he is told. Trump will always do and say what Trump wants. He is a rebel in the Swamp who pushes the boundaries and challenges crooked politicians. He is a threat to the socialist status quo and is feared by the establishment. The trailblazing renegade of the MAGA movement should be fought for alongside Libertarians, not against them. Libertarians must also recognize the weaponization of government by Biden and be ready to join the team to defeat it. There is an absolute distrust of government that can be used as a bridge between these groups.
The Libertarians have made fools of themselves for the past two election cycles. This included their 2016 VP candidate vouching for Hillary Clinton across the corporate fake media and a completely incompetent, and woke, 2020 Presidential candidate. The fundraising for the Libertarian Party has been atrocious and proof that the liberty energy in our country is centered around Trump. This would be a drastic change from the previous messaging of the party, and even of the messaging of the candidates currently seeking the party’s presidential nomination.
These no-name candidates understand that they could be, and in some cases want to be, spoilers to help Joe Biden and the Democrats. The libertarian ideology is more similar to the GOP than the Democrats by a mile and it becomes unnecessary if a candidate is already pushing your message. This is not to say the Libertarians should be forced out, but perhaps, their wisest decision would be to sit out the election and support the removal of dementia Joe Biden. They may find more use in down ballot races where third party challenges would be more welcomed by voters, especially considering the large number of candidates already running.
While the Libertarian Party would find the most success, growth, and legitimacy with a move like this, there will certainly be nay-sayers in the party who will try to prevent this. They almost nominated Justin Amash in 2020, who famously voted to impeach Trump because he got his feelings hurt. The Libertarian Party has press releases attacking Trump and they even tweeted that Trump is the “deep state” this week! He has not gotten a vote at their convention in 2016 or 2020, how strong is the Mises Caucus? Can he trust them?
McArdle’s leadership and decisions had been questioned by Libertarians when she was courting RFK Jr. to run for their party nomination. RFK Jr. ultimately rejected this after pushback was received from the party members. If McArdle is willing to utilize the Libertarian Party for the benefit of MAGA, instead of acting as a detriment, that would be a major win for Trump.
President Trump had the following message to say to the party: “Libertarians are some of the most independent and thoughtful thinkers in our Country, and I am honored to join them in Washington, DC, later this month” “We must all work together to help advance freedom and liberty for every American, and a second Trump Administration will achieve that goal. I look forward to speaking at the Libertarian Event, which will be attended by many of my great friends. We all have to remember that our goal is to defeat the Worst President in the History of the United States, BY FAR, Crooked Joe Biden. If Libertarians join me and the Republican Party, where we have many Libertarian views, the election won’t even be close. We cannot have another four years of death, destruction, and incompetence. WE WILL WORK TOGETHER AND WIN!”
Update- Trump will speak on Saturday, May 25th after their scheduled POTUS debate. The winner of said debate (determined by delegate poll) will get to question Trump with questions passed in a $10 poll. Some have accused the debate qualification to be corrupt and rigged, including a candidate in the race, before this added criteria was established. He accused the Libertarian Party of running a manipulative fundraising scheme that made individuals falsely believe that they were donating to a candidate, instead of to the party.
