NOTE - This story is developing and details are still coming forward.
Democrat legislators Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman (34B) and Senator John Hoffman (SD34) and their spouses were targeted in shootings at their homes. Sources report that Hortman and her husband were shot and they passed away. Sources also report that Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times and are alive and recovering.
The suspected shooter was reportedly impersonating a police officer and broke into both lawmakers’ homes. As of writing this article, the hunt was still underway for police to track down the shooter. Sources say the suspect was a white male with brown hair wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants. A shelter in place alert was sent out by the Brooklyn Park Police Department at 5:30AM. A motive has not yet been established. Reportedly a manifesto from the shooter exists containing a list of names.
According to Fox 10 News, the police arrived at Hortman’s house and saw an SUV equipped with lights mimicking a police squad vehicle. They say they were confronted by a man dressed as an officer and that the man fired at the police, who returned fire, before retreating into the home.
Reports have also shown the following flyers in the suspected shooters vehicle relating to "No Kings" protests. These protests are demonstrations arguing that President Trump is an authoritarian. See below:
It goes without saying that these evil actions must be condemned by all. Violence of all kinds, especially targeted attacks taking the lives of others, is evil and morally bankrupt. The shooter showed up to the homes of legislators with deadly intent and must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Melissa Hortman’s legacy from her two decades in the State House will be remembered as a respected, formidable, tough, and tactical leader who can negotiate and deliver legislation that Democrats wanted. Senator John Hoffman is also thought of highly by his colleagues and is respected across the aisle.
Action 4 Liberty offers our thoughts and prayers to the Hortman and Hoffman families during these incredibly tough times and wish for a speedy recovery for Senator John Hoffman and his wife.
