Putting our state in debt to fund pet projects for special interests and lobbyists is never the conservative position, it is always the big government, liberal position. Debt (bonding) bills require 60% support from both chambers which means Republican support is needed in the House and Senate to pass. This leverage could have been used to negotiate strong hardlines but instead RINOs went along with the big government spending and got NOTHING from it.
As discussed in our previous reporting, the $700M debt bill (HF18) spends the maximum debt capacity permitted by the March 6th state budget forecast. This is a corrupt bill that gives the state government debt for not just individual projects, but also gives $80 Million for Dept. of Transportation. This means the government is going to take on debt for a government agency and that agency can appropriate money in ways designed for the legislature!
This bill also gives $16M to the corrupt Met Council, $60M to the woke University of Minnesota, and other wasteful projects. Like usual, politicians with power on the bill get to throw money wherever they want to boost re-election prospects and in this case, House Capital Investment co-chair RINO Rep. Mary Franson (12B) got $24M for a college in her district. In addition, this bill spends $8.5M for a tunnel at the Capitol building and $3M on other projects on the building, the waste just never ends!
Only 10 Republicans in the Senate stood up to the out of control spending via the $700M debt bill. See Senate vote below:
Only 15 Republicans in the House stood up to out of control spending via the $700M debt bill. See House vote below:
There was additionally a "cash" bonding bill for more projects and spending that did not fit in the $700M debt bill. This bill pulled money away from the general fund. This bill (HF17) spends over $15M on a variety of unrelated items. The vote on this bill 96-34 in the House and 37-30 in the Senate.
Action 4 Liberty will continue to expose the corruption in our state and stand shoulder to shoulder with grassroots conservatives in the fight for liberty. Out of control spending and debt is a bipartisan, Uniparty position. While Republicans had the chance to flex their leverage, all of it has been thrown down the drain thanks to the RINOs voting with Democrats.
