The 2026 MN legislature kicked off today (Tuesday, Feb. 17th) at noon.

In 2025, the MN Legislature passed a $700M Debt (bonding) Bill (HF18) that funded pet projects across the state to benefit incumbent legislators. Bonding Bills are a tool for politicians to spend more than the government has collected in taxes by putting our state in debt. While Minnesota taxpayers have to live within their means, the MN state government has never seen a dollar that they don’t want to spend.

Instead of leading the charge against big government spending, House Speaker Lisa Demuth is advocating for ANOTHER Debt Bill!

Empty Suit Lisa Demuth discussed a 2026 bonding bill in a recent press conference and argued that there are more projects that need funding. She even bragged about the $700M Debt Bill passed last session but said some projects were left out. While Demuth says she will make no promises on another bill passing, she clearly has no issue with giving our state more debt.

As seen in the February 2025 MMB Budget and Economic Forecast, the legislature spent the MAXIMUM amount that they could put our state in debt! If they were allowed to do a billion dollars of debt, they probably would’ve done it! See below:

Lisa Demuth states in the press conference that the MN government “doesn’t have money right now and that is a choice that was made over time” however she leaves out that SHE was the one who made the choice to waste away our tax dollars! In the 2025 legislative session, Lisa Demuth voted for every single bill that was signed into law by Tim Walz and led the passage of the 2nd LARGEST budget in MN history (that was negotiated behind closed doors) As seen in the 2025 A4L Scorecard, Demuth voted for every single omnibus bill funding all of the fraud, corruption, and leftist agendas last year. Conservatives know they are not well-represented in the state legislature because only 10 GOP Senators and 15 GOP Reps opposed the Debt Bill in 2025.

As seen in previous A4L reporting, politicians and the media are lying by claiming there is a deficit when there is actually a $6.2B surplus! Also seen in previous A4L reporting, Uniparty legislators even took a taxpayer funded bus to celebrate the massive $700M debt where RINOs like Mary Franson (12B) and Carla Nelson (SD24) showed just how out of touch they are with grassroots conservatives.

A bonding bill requires 60% support from both the House and Senate which means that Republicans can BLOCK the big government debt! Recent A4L reporting showed how several RINO Senators have already punted the ball on fiscal responsibility and want to make sure their chosen pet projects are funded in another Debt Bill.

With Lisa Demuth running for Governor, all eyes will be on her during this legislative session. Conservatives are sick of the out of control spending and Lisa Demuth holds a lot of blame on that topic. The bonding bill will likely be the biggest ticket item for the 2026 legislative session and Republican voters will not want to see Lisa Demuth spending recklessly as she has done throughout her term as Speaker.
